job description - Communication Officer (COMMO)


  • Sasakawa Africa Association (SM) Nigeria requires the services of a dynamic, proactive Communications Officer who can work independently while also working as part of a team to deliver high-quality results to enhance SM’s work and raise its visibility.
  • S/he must be able to use modern technologies and social networks to communicate in real-time, the core achievements of the Country Program. In consultation with the Country Team and the Head of Communications and Advocacy at the Regional Office,
  • S/he must ensure the overall planning, implementation, coordination, supervision, and reporting of communication activities at the national level.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develops a country communication strategy
  • Raises the profile of the SAA country program through strategic communication
  • Uses SAA’s branding to improve its visibility as an International NGO to donors and strategic partners
  • In collaboration with the Country Team, organizes and coordinates agricultural field and media field days and make appropriate documentation, reporting and follow up with media houses
  • Working with the Country Director and in collaboration with the Regional Communications Unit to coordinate the organizations public relations engagement and regularly update social media platforms with up to date, accurate and quality information in accordance with SAA communications guidelines
  • Develops and consolidates strong media networks to increase outreach with ly partners, policymakers, donors, and other stakeholders.
  • Manages and maintains a progressive database of partners, collaborators, service providers, and associates by collaboration with the technical and administration units.
  • Documents and communicates program results/success stories through appropriate strategies (lessons learned, impact stories, photographs, and short videos).
  • Identifies communication gaps and develops and conducts communications-related training for technical and field staff.
  • Manages the organization’s key events and any other PR functions including the issuance of press releases.
  • Collaborates with SM management to identify new communications platforms and ideas, design effective communication strategies as well as establish and maintain effective relationships with media houses.
  • Assists in partnership and fund-raising matter
  • Ensures all organizational events are well documented (reports, photos, and videos)

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mass Communications, Journalism or any other related field. A master’s degree is an added advantage.
  • At least three years’ experience in communications and media relations preferably in development programmes
  • Candidates should have strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of various media applications and channels of communications.
  • Practical proven skills in photography and videography.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to write policy briefs as well as publish in journals.
